Ogre

Fantasy creature design has always been one of my greatest passions. I believe designing monsters is often underestimated, despite the level of creativity, anatomical knowledge, and storytelling it demands.

During my studies in Canada, I was inspired by the incredible work of many talented artists. At that time, fantasy characters such as orcs, monsters, and the iconic Hellboy were incredibly popular, motivating me to challenge myself and explore creature design on a deeper level.

This project was my attempt to create a fictional ancient ogre, combining believable anatomy with rich surface detail and a strong sense of history. My primary goal was to design a visually complex creature while focusing on anatomical accuracy and layered skin details.

The production process involved multiple workflows. Some assets were sculpted directly in ZBrush and later retopologized in 3D-Coat, while others were modeled with clean topology in Maya before being refined and detailed in ZBrush.

One of the most effective techniques I used for creating surface details involved building a clean mesh in Maya, creating proper UVs, and importing the model into Mari. There, I projected various textures, converted them to grayscale, and used them as custom alphas inside ZBrush to sculpt the fine surface details. This workflow proved to be both fast and efficient, with the added advantage of ensuring that the sculpted details matched the final texture work, resulting in a more cohesive and believable asset.

Software Used: Maya, ZBrush, 3D-Coat, Mari, Photoshop, and UVLayout.
